Chianti Classico

Tenuta Casenuove – Chianti Classico 2016

Blending of 80% of Sangiovese, 15% Merlot and 5% Cabernet Sauvignon, this vintage is remarkably fresh, with a very elegant nose and hints of cherry aromas.

Soil: Calcareous clayschist of marine origin.

Grape varieties: Sangiovese 80%, Merlot 15%, Cabernet Sauvignon 5%.

Winemaking: Entirely hand-harvested, the bunches go through a double selection process. Individual grape varieties ferment in epoxy-lined concrete tanks. The wine is macerated on the skins up to 30 days, carefully evaluating tannin structure and wine extraction in order to favour the aromatic profile of each grape variety. Average yield is 30 hl/ha.

2016 Vintage: Harvest started later compared to the previous year, due to chilly and wet weather during springtime. The vines went through a time of stress due to the excess of humidity in the soil. This was however resolved in the summer, with the absence of any major rainfall event. Harvest was completed by mid-October and was concentrated within a couple of weeks. A meticulous selection work was necessary both in the vineyard and at grape reception.

Ageing: Mainly in concrete tanks, 5 hl tonneaux and 25 hl casks for 6 – 10 months.

Tasting notes: Deep red ruby in colour, with a violet hue. The nose reveals scents of raspberries, cherries and violets. The palate stands out for the freshness of the red fruit, characterised by ripe tannins and a balanced acidity. A hint of savouriness on the finish.

Pairings: Charcuterie, fresh and aged sheep cheese, grilled and roasted meats.

Tenuta Casenuove – Chianti Classico 2015

Acquired by Philippe Austruy in 2015, the domaine now has 20 hectares in production and has been completely re-worked. The plots in the vineyard have been carefully split into separate zones. Situated on the marine clay-schist and clay-limestone slopes which are the signature terrain of the great Tuscan wines, it is already fulfilling its promise in full measure. This blend comes almost exclusively from the “Vignoble Pozzo” plot and is notable for its fruitiness, its youthful air and its spicy roundness, in the finest tradition of the best Chianti Classico

Soil: Clay-limestone and schists. Slopes with South-South-West exposure.

Grape varieties: Sangiovese 80%, Merlot 15%, Cabernet Sauvignon 5%.

Growing: Near-organic sustainable agriculture. Averageage of vines 20 years. Yields of 30 hectolitres per  hectare.

Winemaking: Manual harvesting. Sorting in the field and in the wine cellar. Traditional vinification in concrete vats with punching over and racking. Macerated for
one month.

2015 Vintage: A perfect year, with a wonderful balance of sunshine and rain, producing fully-developed wines with great body.

Ageing: 10 months in concrete and stainless steel vats, with 15% aged in tuns.

Tasting notes: Garnet red in colour, as soon as it is exposed to the air it releases aromas of violets, raspberries, liquorice and pepper. The long, perfumed finish concludes with fruity notes and a light touch of minerality.
