Tenuta Casenuove – IGT Tuscany 2015
Acquired by Philippe Austruy in 2014, this domaine with 20 hectares in production has been completely re-worked. The plots in the vineyard have been carefully split into separate zones. Situated on the marine clay-schist and claylimestone slopes which are the signature terrain of the great Tuscan wines, it is already fulfilling its promise in full measure. This blend comes from selected vineyards, some from the hilltops and some from the lower slopes.
Soil: Clay-limestone and schists. Slopes with South-South-West exposure.
Varieties: 60% Sangiovese, 40% Merlot.
Growing: Near-organic sustainable agriculture. Average age of vines 20 years. Yields of 30 hectolitres per hectare.
The 2015 vintage: A perfect year. Sunshine alternating with welcome spells of rain. It was a winegrower’s dream and produced strong, silky-smooth wines with a fine balance between alcohol and acidity. Complete wines.
Vinification: Manual harvesting. Sorting in the field and in the wine store. Traditional vinification in concrete vats with punching over and racking. Macerated for one month.
Aging: 12 months in tuns and small casks.
Tasting: With its rich garnet colour, this blend immediately shows what it is capable of: a magnificent bouquet of black and red fruits, mocha and mineral notes, with great complexity. The dense, concentrated palate reveals fine, firm tannins, as ripe as one could wish. The texture is velvety, with great volume right from the start and an underlying freshness which adds firmness, then stretches out into a finish which is full, tannic and voluptuous.
Pairing: Grilled rib steak, a plate of charcuterie, sautéed poultry livers.
Consultant : Stéphane Derenoncourt.
Keeping: 10 to 12 years.
